I had high hopes, being a Trekker, that this game would be great. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed.
Apart from most of the visuals - scenery, units, buildings, explosions - which were good, the gameplay left a lot to be desired. Everything moved at a snail's pace. Units kept getting stuck. Any missed click resulted in a boring scroll back to the colony hub. Too many issues to list.
I also expected the intelligence and industry of Star Trek. Missions could be lost due to lack of personnel or resources, which felt unrealistic. Picard always found a way to get a phaser tank or build a structure. There was too much micromanagement and not enough action. In one mission, I couldn't build fast enough to stop the enemy. Most players aren't elite gamers - there should be a way to build up strength before launching a mission.
Speaking of strength, for a Starfleet fleet of phaser tanks and artillery, my mates and I could take them out on a hunting trip - drunk! It felt like Starfleet put amateurs in charge of weapons.
Also, Starfleet can scan entire planets. Why then the need for a scout vehicle just to see the terrain or enemy? Again, micromanagement detracted from the mission and enjoyment of an already slow game.
The game claims to be an RTSG, but strategy doesn't seem to matter. Success depends on superior numbers and luck. I expected more story, more Trek. Instead, it felt like Starfleet was run by drunken morons fresh out of kindergarten. I doubt anyone would truly enjoy this game - unless you like pulling your hair out. Rating? I want my money back!
